In the upcoming MMO New World game, Amazon expressed its firm opposition to paying to win. They said they will include an in-game store at the time of launch, but will not provide character enhancement or any content directly related to gameplay.
The standard version of the game is scheduled to be released on August 31, 2021. It is priced at $39.99 and is a one-time purchase.
According to creative director David Verfaillie, the "focus" of the store will be cosmetics that players can use to "enhance" the character's visual effects. These microtransactions will provide players with an alternative aesthetic.
"We must have heard feedback from players, and our point is that we don't want [New World] to become a paid-to-win experience," Verfaillie said at a press conference.
The "focus" of the store is cosmetics at launch, but the developers believe that the space for "improving the quality of life" will not enter the "pay-to-win field".
"We will focus on the beauty experience at launch," Verfaillie explained. "We believe this is something that players will like and will never cross the line. Then we will work with our community to decide where we can go. Everyone thinks it's fair."
According to Verfaillie, in the future, players will be able to purchase things like extra storage space and New World Items from the store. However, all currencies available in the real world can also be obtained in the game.
"In games, there are multiple ways to increase your storage space. But some people may not have the time or want to make a commitment to all these in-game ways," Verfaillie said. "Therefore, there are only ways that people with less time can keep up with the players in some ways."
The cost of these microtransactions remains to be seen, but considering that New World does not exceed the initial subscription model of $39.99, cosmetics will almost certainly pay a price. Now you may need to have a New World Account.
